Guyana’s path to their second appearance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup was confirmed yesterday, as they will face off against Central American outfit Guatemala in a two-match series in March 2025 following the official draw yesterday.
It will be the fourth meeting of the nations, with Guyana sporting an unenviable record of four losses. In the previous meeting, which occurred in League A of the CONCACAF Nations League, Guyana went down 1-3 to the Guatemalans.
Guyana qualified for the CONCACAF Prelims following a 9-4 aggregate victory over Barbados during a home and away series in the Play-In aspect of the event. Guyana won the first leg 4-1 away before prevailing 5-3 at home.
Meanwhile, GFF President Wayne Forde said, “Congratulations to the staff and players for qualifying for the Concacaf Gold Cup Preliminary play-off for the third consecutive time. Barbados presented quite a challenge tonight, but the boys held their nerves and gave the fans a much-deserved victory on home soil. We must now set our sights on qualifying for Guyana’s second Gold Cup appearance.”
