Nigel Abrams, a 32-year-old man from Black Water, North West District, Region One, has been sentenced to life in prison for the killing of his 17-year-old stepson, Daniel Wilson.
The incident occurred on April 17, 2022. Abrams will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years.
The sentence was delivered by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Deme-rara last week. Initially charged with murder, Abrams pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter. During the hearing, he was represented by attorney Joshua Benn while attorney Delon Fraser prosecuted the case.
This sentencing followed a separate 12-year prison term handed down on Monday by Justice Peter Hugh for Abrams’ attempted murder of 19-year-old Ron Moonsammy, Wilson’s cousin. That incident occurred during the same violent altercation.
The confrontation took place around 10:00 pm on April 17, 2022, when Abrams, Wilson, and Moonsammy were drinking together. An argument between Abrams and Wilson escalated, leading to violence. When Moonsammy attempted to intervene to protect his cousin, Abrams stabbed him in the chest, leaving him critically injured. Wilson was fatally attacked during the altercation.
Moonsammy was rushed to the Mabaruma Public Hospital and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he received life-saving treatment.
In addition to his life sentence, Justice Kissoon ordered Abrams to participate in educational and behaviour modification programmes during his incarceration, emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation.
