Ganesh Dhanraj, also known as “Jango,” was found guilty on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, on charges of wounding with intent to commit murder and wounding with intent to maim, disfigure, or disable.
The verdict, delivered by a 12-member jury, concluded with a 10-2 majority.
The charges stem from two incidents in December 2014 involving Clinton Babooram, the virtual complainant. Prosecutors alleged that on December 16, 2014, Dhanraj wounded Babooram with intent to murder him.
During the trial, Babooram, of Lot 185 Montrose, East Coast Demerara, testified that on December 16, 2014, he was standing near a bar about 20 feet from his house when Dhanraj approached him. According to Babooram, Dhanraj ran toward him and shouted, “Clinton, you next,” before stabbing him in the groin with a knife. Babooram reported feeling a burning sensation before fainting.
Babooram said he regained consciousness one or two days later at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). He stated that while he had no personal issues with Dhanraj, his brother and Dhanraj had been involved in a dispute.
Medical reports presented in court highlighted the severity of the injuries. A report from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital detailed a 2 cm puncture wound to Babooram’s groin, accompanied by profuse bleeding and a suspected vascular injury. The injury was deemed life-threatening, necessitating urgent surgical care and blood transfusion.
GPHC’s medical report confirmed a stab wound to the right inguinal region with femoral vein injury. Babooram required emergency surgery and was admitted to the hospital’s surgery ward for treatment.
Justice Navindra Singh presided over the trial. Dhanraj’s sentencing is expected on December 16 2024.
