The 2024 European Union (EU) Delegation Human Rights Award was last evening bestowed on founder of the Youths with Purpose and veteran social worker Maureen Hope who has dedicated 21 years of her life to working to improving the lives and empower the disadvantaged in the Crane, West Coast Demerara area.
EU Ambassador René van Nes last night at the reception to honour Hope said that the EU recognizes that each country has unique challenges regarding human rights and by working closely with local civil society organisations, the EU can adopt tailored approaches that reflect the specific needs and contexts of different areas, thus enhancing the effectiveness of its human rights interventions.
“Civil society organizations (CSOs) play a crucial role in promoting democracy and good governance. By engaging with these groups, the EU aims to enhance citizen participation in political processes, thereby fostering a more inclusive and representative governance structure,” he said at a reception at his residence in Bel Air Springs.
“CSOs serve as vital watchdogs that monitor human rights conditions and advocate for accountability. Their on-the-ground presence allows them to report human rights abuses and mobilize public opinion, which is essential for the EU’s efforts to address violations effectively,” he added.
Through various initiatives, according to the European Union envoy, the EU provides financial support and capacity-building opportunities for CSOs. This helps to strengthen their ability to engage in advocacy, monitor government actions, and participate in policy-making processes.
Hope expressed that she was honoured to receive the award for her works over the past decades, a passion driven by her own struggles growing up. She thanked contributors to her cause who have through the years given support.
Since 2017, the EU Delegation to Guyana annually presents the Human Rights Award to recognize and honour individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights within the country. This award underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting human rights defenders and civil society organizations in Guyana.
