Following consecutive wins against Barbados in the CONCACAF Play-in series, Golden Jaguars caretaker manager Wayne Dover stated that his goal is to once again be the permanent head-coach of the senior men’s programme.

Speaking at the conclusion of the second leg in the CONCACAF Play-in Series against Barbados, Dover said, “Every coach does aspire to be head coach of the senior national team, and I have that aspiration to become the head coach once again, and I do hope that these performances weigh heavily on the administration’s mind, and you don’t know, maybe they decide it’s time to give Dover a chance and back him full-time, so we wait and see what comes out of that.”

Under the guidance of Dover, Guyana qualified for the CONCACAF Prelims following a 9-4 aggregate victory over Barbados during a home and away series in the Play-In aspect of the event. Guyana won the first leg 4-1 away before prevailing 5-3 at home.

It was Guyana’s first international assignment since the departure of Trinidad and Tobago native Jamaal Shabazz, who was relieved of his duties following the team’s dismal maiden campaign in League A of the CONCACAF Nations League. Guyana ended with a record of three losses and a draw.

The Guyanese will now oppose Guatemala in a two-match series in March 2025 following the official draw for a place in the Gold Cup.

It will be the fifth meeting of the nations, with Guyana sporting an unenviable record of four losses. In the previous meeting, which occurred in League A of the CONCACAF Nations League, Guyana went down 1-3 to the Guatemalans.
