– event ended in August
Despite concluding the KFC Elite League since August 24th, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is yet to remunerate the prizes to the top four finishers in the championship.
This was disclosed by a source close to the federation who spoke on the condition of anonymity. According to the source, “The GFF is yet to pay the prizes for the KFC Elite League, and there is no timeline that has been confirmed as to when this will be remedied. The tournament has been finished since August, and the teams have not received a dime from the federation. The players are querying when this issue will be fixed given that the GFF is expected to stage a year-end tournament. How can this be the premier club tournament in the country, and you are owing players? It’s ridiculous and just reflects badly on the sport, which is already faced with many challenges, especially in the realm of sponsorship. This also reflects badly on the sponsors because the public is not armed with all the details when it comes to sponsorship.”
Defending champion, the Guyana Defence Force retained their crown. They are owed $2,000,000. On the other hand, Slingerz FC, the Guyana Police Force, and the Western Tigers, who finished in second, third, and fourth, respectively, are owed $1,000,000, $800,000, and $500,000, respectively.
Efforts to contact the GFF for a comment proved futile. An electronic mail (email) containing the question, ‘Has the GFF paid the prize monies for the KFC Elite League to the top four finishers’ was sent to the GFF Communications Department but went unanswered up to press time.
GFF President Wayne Forde, when previously contacted via the digital messaging platform WhatsApp, implored this publication to direct all its queries via email to that department.
Presently, the GFF, according to a correspondence that was sent to the respective presidents and secretaries of the Elite League clubs, intends to stage a year-end club championship.
