Guyana’s Senior Men’s National Rugby team, the ‘Green Machine’ ground to a halt yesterday in their opening Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens fixture against Canada. The Guyanese were handed a sobering 29-0 defeat, albeit, at the hands of arguably the strongest outfit at the competition in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago.

While the Guyanese management opined that the defeat could have been much worse, the Green Machine will be looking to pick itself up and rebound strongly today when they face old rivals Barbados as well as Bermuda. They will need to win both matches to be in contention for a favourable quarter-final berth.

In their match against Canada yesterday, the opponent’s Captain, Elias Hancock scored two tries while David Richard, Thomas Isherwood and Kyle Tremblay added a try each for Canada, which led 17-0 at the half. Isherwood also kicked two conversions to round off a brilliant all-round game.

Eight teams inclusive of Guyana are vying for top honours with the top four teams securing qualification to a promotion/relegation battle in May of 2025. The top four teams from the RAN challenger series will face off against the bottom four from the HSBC Sevens at the Sevens World Championships May 3-4 in Carson, California, USAS.

The eight participating teams are Guyana, Canada, Barbados, Bermuda, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexico and hosts Trinidad and Tobago.
