Police are investigating an accident that claimed the life of a 34-year-old Port Mourant fisherman yesterday at about 16.50 hours after his vehicle ran into the Babu John access dam canal.
The deceased, identified as Mitchell Benn of Lot 203 Area ‘R’, Ankerville, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, was the owner and driver of a pickup – GRR 9936. Benn’s wife, Karel Woodruff, told the Sunday Stabroek that her husband was on his way to the waterfront to check on the tide to figure out when he could return to sea when the accident occurred.
Investigations revealed that the fisherman was proceeding west along the access dam at Babu John, allegedly at a fast rate, when he lost control of the vehicle and ended up in the nearby canal. The pickup was completely submerged.
Benn was taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious condition and rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The body is currently at Ramoo’s funeral home where it awaits a post mortem examination.
