The Guyana Power and Light Inc yesterday said that a transmission line trip was the cause for the system wide shutdown of its Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS)
“At approximately 11:31 hrs, the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) experienced a trip on the L3 Transmission Line which connects the Golden Grove and Garden of Eden Substations. Consequently, service to customers in Demerara and Berbice was disrupted,” GPL said in a statement.
“Restoration of service immediately commenced. At 12:13 hrs while attempting to repower the affected areas a second trip occurred. Our technicians, upon subsequent examination, discovered an overload on the busbar (conductor) at the Garden of Eden Substation,” it added.
The utility company stated that at the time of the service interruptions, the line was transferring approximately 21 and 33 megawatts (MWs) of power respectively. Restoration efforts continued and at approximately 13:59 hrs, all areas in Demerara and Berbice were repowered.
“We understand the inconveniences associated with unplanned service interruptions and remain committed to eliminating these occurrences by working assiduously towards ensuring a safe and reliable power supply to our customers,” GPL said.
