Pensioner crushed to death by lorry near harbour bridge

A 78-year-old Herstelling man died in an early morning accident yesterday as he attempted to cross in front of a moving truck in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

According to a release from the police, Sheik Hassan of Lot 69 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, died at around 6:19 am on the western carriageway of the Peters Hall Public Road, East Bank Demerara in an accident involving motor lorry #GAC 6742, owned and driven by Arif Hussain, a 32-year-old from Annandale

The police statement said that the lorry was proceeding north along Peters Hall Public Road and as the lorry was near the Harbour Bridge, police ranks engaged in the directing of traffic called on the northbound traffic to proceed. However, the pedestrian crossed the road from west to east in front of the lorry and, in doing so, the front of the lorry struck him.

As a result of the collision, he fell on the road and the lorry rolled over him.

The ambulance service was summoned to the scene and the man was pronounced dead.
