This public disagreement can be ameliorated through a cohesive display of our six cultures

Dear Editor,

The public disagreement between Mr. Green and Mr. Bisram will sow further disunity and discord between the Indo Guyanese and Afro Guyanese communities. It is clear that the “One Guyana” objective is not a consideration in this discussion. If separate cultural centres are required then there should be one for each of our six peoples. If there is a National Culture that we as “One People” would like to embrace then we must agree to also have a location where this can be nurtured, developed and displayed. The National Cultural Centre (NCC) is near the Office of the President. This is a great location for the country to promote its national agenda.

One of the major opportunities at the National Cultural Centre is the need to display aspects of each of our six peoples’ culture throughout the Centre. The artwork at the entrance lacks representative details that showcases each of our six peoples. I recently saw a collage of photos showing the beauty of each of our six peoples. It was gorgeous! The National Cultural Centre should pursue a similar undertaking, where the traditional dress of each of our six peoples is displayed in the main hall of the NCC. The PPP has recently invested in the refurbishment of the Centre.

Let’s work together to find a way to make it a place where the Nation can establish a strong national identity. Sharing our individual cultures and highlighting the beauty of our diversity is a strength that does not risk losing who we are as an individual people. After all, Guyana is the “Land of Six Peoples”.

Sincerely,
