Following what seems like a rushed buildup, the world’s newest franchise T20 cricket league, the Global Super League will burst onto the scene tonight at the Providence National Stadium here in Guyana with local franchise, the Guyana Amazon Warriors taking on Pakistani outfit, the Lahore Qualandars.
Scheduled to bowl off at 7 pm, the Warriors will be led by returning captain Imran Tahir while Pakistani international Shaheen Afridi will skipper the Qualandars.
The Warriors side boasts a handful of Guyanese cricketers in Romario Shepherd, Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul and Kevlon Anderson as well as England all-rounder Moen Ali.
The other participating franchises are the Rangpur Riders (Bangladesh), Hampshire Hawks (England) and Victoria (Australia).
The league sees a prize pool of US $1M up for grabs and will run for the next week and a half, culminating in the final slated for next Friday (December 6) between the top two teams from the round robin phase.
In the build up to tonight’s start, tickets sold at local outlets around the country have not had the same pull as CPL usually invites and tickets have been given away in large quantities through a variety of promotions held by the organisers.
The GSL is an initiative of Guyanese President, Dr. Irfan Ali and is sponsored by ExxonMobil Guyana with support from Windsor Estates, ENet and other partners.
