West Demerara Football League
Pouderoyen maintained their perfect record to climb atop the standings in the West Demerara Football Association Senior Men’s League, dismantling Belle West 4-1 at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground.
The Belle West unit secured the unlikely lead in the fifth minute via a Ben Williams strike. The conversion emanated from the corner-kick, after the defender failed to clear the danger, allowing the forward to round the advancing goalkeeper and finish into the back of the net.
It went from bad to worse for Pouderoyen as they were reduced to 10 men after Keron Boyce was issued a red card in the 12th minute.
Nonetheless, and despite their numerical handicap, the lead proved to be short-lived as Matthew Chidume etched his name on the score-sheet to level the contest in the 15th minute. The goal was created by Stephon Jupiter, who dribbled the opposing full-back before crossing the ball into the path of the onrushing Matthew Chidume, who finished past the goalkeeper into the right corner.
The score remained unchanged entering the halftime break. However, upon the resumption, three conversions in the space of 21 minutes secured the come from behind win.
Pouderoyen took the lead in almost identical fashion to their previous conversion, as Jupiter evaded his marker before squaring the ball into the path of Chidume, who slammed his effort into the back of the net from inside the penalty area in the 56th minute.
Jupiter then took on the scoring burden in the 62nd minute to double his side’s advantage. Chidume was the provider in this instance, as the wily forward uncorked a cross from the right side, which fell into the path of Jupiter, who dribbled his marker before slotting the ball into the left corner.
The come from behind win was then sealed in the 77th minute as Demetri Osbourne found the back of the net. Racing onto a pass from Darrel Abrams on the right side of the field, Osbourne evaded the challenges of three opposing players before rifling a power shot into the roof of the net from inside the penalty area.
Pouderoyen coach Travis Bess, during a post-match comment, said, “It was a good test of characters for the team after going down a player in the first 12 minutes. They showed great character and discipline to grind out the victory. It shows that this bunch of players has come a long way, even though we have a lot still to do and improve on. It is good to see them stay focused and achieve the objective, which was the victory.”
Due to the outcome, Pouderoyen climbed onto 18 points and claimed the top spot ahead of fellow unbeaten side Uitvlugt owing to their superior goal differential. On the other hand, Belle West drops to fifth place and remains on 11 points.
Meanwhile, the No. #1 All-Stars edged Limitless 2-1. Marlon Duncan opened the scoring for the All-Stars unit as he found the back of the net in the seventh minute. However, Limitless restored parity to proceedings in the form of Jaheel Blake, who scored in the 21st minute. The score remained unchanged entering the halftime interval.
Nevertheless, Duncan would secure the go-ahead winner, as he completed his brace following a 56th-minute conversion.
With the result, the All-Stars unit climbs onto 13 points and moves into fourth place, while the loser remains pointless in the cellar.
