The Canadian High Commission here yesterday presented two grants totaling of $100,000 CAD (7.5 million GYD) each to empower indigenous communities and combat gender violence.
The presentations were made under the Local Engagement and Action Fund (LEAF). The initiative, now in its second year, focuses on empowering communities and addressing critical social challenges in Guyana.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Adam Loyer, Head of Co-operation at the Canadian High Commission, emphasized Ottawa’s dedication to localized development strategies.
“By empowering local communities and organizations, we ensure that solutions are tailored to the unique needs of Guyana’s diverse communities. This approach fosters ownership and long-term sustainability,” he said.
The first agreement was signed with Blossom Inc., which will implement the ECHOES Project (Empowerment, Community, Hope, Outreach, Education, and Support) in Region 10. The initiative aims to address gender-based violence and child sexual abuse through education, advocacy, and strengthened support systems. Blossom Inc. will work to increase reporting rates and ensure survivors have access to justice and vital support services.
Blossom Inc Chairwoman Ayodele Dalgetty-Dean hailed the collaboration as a critical step forward.
“Gender-based violence is a human rights violation and a barrier to progress. With Canada’s support, we will create safer communities and challenge harmful norms”, she said.
The second agreement partners with the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA), which will work with Indigenous communities in Regions 1 and 9. This project seeks to empower Indigenous women, healthcare workers, and community leaders through education, capacity-building, and entrepreneurship programmes. It also aims to reduce gender-based violence through culturally relevant media campaigns and prevention strategies.
“We believe that empowering youth and addressing gender-based violence are crucial to building inclusive societies and achieving sustainable development goals,” Loyer remarked.
The projects are expected to be rolled out immediately and are expected to run in other regions in time to come.
