-quick action by firefighters saves building
Owner of a restaurant, Tomuka Seepaul-Roach, is grateful for the quick response yesterday by the New Amsterdam branch of the Guyana Fire Service, which averted the total destruction of a two-story concrete home at Budhan Housing Scheme, West Canje, Berbice
Seepaul-Roach, a married mother of two, had left her business at St John Street and Republic Road, just after 13.05 hours, to return home for some documents. Some 20 minutes after leaving her home, she recieved a call from her brother Daniel that her apartment was on fire.
Initially, she did not believe it, as nothing seemed amiss during her short visit home. But persistent calls from neighbours and others convinced her that someting had definitely gone wrong.
However, by the time she got home, the fire was under control and just her bedroom was damaged. “I lost all my clothing, footwear, and that of my husband and son. All the bedroom furniture and some documents were burnt. Fortunately, my daughter’s room was not destroyed.
The woman praised the efficiency of the New Amsterdam division of the Guyana Fire Service. The firemen had gained access to her home by breaking down the door, before proceeding to extinguish the fire.
The businesswoman also praised the Guyana Police Force, and Mayor Wainwright McIntosh for their timely assistance. She stated that the fire was electrical and stemmed from a bulb in the ceiling above her bed.
The building is owned by Seepaul-Roach’s, mother Anna Seepaul, the owner of Wattsann Catering. She is currently overseas.
