The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development handed over a state-of-the-art garbage truck to the Bartica Town Council on Friday, enhancing the municipality’s waste management capacity and reaffirming the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The truck is expected to significantly improve garbage collection, supporting Bartica’s ongoing efforts to maintain its status as a model green community and provide a cleaner, healthier environment for residents.

Minister of Local Government, Sonia Parag, highlighted the importance of the initiative during the handing-over ceremony. “It may not seem like much, but it definitely creates an impact and honours the government’s commitment to ensure garbage collection is done and done effectively. This is one step towards achieving that.” She added, “This also adds value to the people of our country.”

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Gail Teixeira, urged the Bartica Town Council to prioritise communication and engagement with the community to ensure timely garbage collection. “Effective waste management requires collaboration between the council and residents. Open communication is key to ensuring garbage collection schedules are adhered to and that the system works efficiently”, she said.

And Mayor of Bartica, Martin Murray, expressed gratitude for the government’s support, describing the new truck as a significant asset for the town. “This initiative demonstrates the government’s dedication to Bartica’s development and the well-being of our residents.”

Bartica residents have welcomed the development, optimistic that the improved waste collection system will discourage dumping and encourage responsible disposal practices.
