The mother of Jonathan Gomes, the 27-year-old who died in an accident in Mahaicony in May of this year, is calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.
Aubrey Gomes, who was out of the country at the time of the incident, has returned to Guyana to seek clarity on what transpired.
She said that on the night of the accident, the driver of the motor lorry involved fled the scene. According to Gomes, reliable sources have informed her that the person initially implicated was not behind the wheel, but rather a younger individual was driving at the time.
Gomes has been gathering video footage from the night of the accident to piece together the events leading up to her son’s death. She has shared some of the footage with the Sunday Stabroek and is urging anyone with additional information to come forward and assist her in the investigation.
According to a police report, the accident occurred on May 23 at about 8:25 pm on the Columbia Public Road, Mahaicony, and involved a truck, GSS 6980, driven by Odit Ramdeen of Airy Hall, Mahaicony, and a car, PVV 3618, driven by Gomes, of Canary Street, Tucville, Georgetown.
Investigations revealed that the lorry was heading east along the road when Gomes’ car, travelling west, reportedly overtook several vehicles on a bend at high speed, ending up in the lorry’s path. The lorry driver attempted to avoid a collision by swerving onto the parapet but was unable to prevent the crash.
The car struck the front of the lorry, causing the larger vehicle to collide with a utility pole. Public-spirited citizens reportedly removed Gomes, who was unconscious, from his vehicle and transported him to the Mahaicony Public Hospital along with the lorry driver. Gomes was pronounced dead on arrival, while the lorry driver was treated and discharged.
