Though Adams has been crocheting for three years, his passion was temporarily set aside for a year while he focused on earning his culinary qualifications at the Carnegie School of Home Economics. During that time, he discovered how much he missed his creative outlet but knew his priority was becoming a certified chef. His journey in the culinary arts began at 16 when he started preparing breakfast for his late grandfather. Eggs, sausage, and French toast became his signature “classic breakfast,” a small yet significant gesture of care that deepened his connection with cooking.
Despite initial resistance to following his mother’s career path, Adams eventually embraced it. As a child, he wasn’t allowed in the kitchen, even though his mother was a chef. However, the joy of cooking for his grandfather, coupled with the older man’s encouragement, motivated him to continue on this path. Adams admitted he wanted to quit many times, feeling unsure about his direction. Yet, his grandfather’s reminder that “education is key” echoed in his mind long after his passing, inspiring Adams to persist.
Over time, Adams grew to enjoy the art of cooking. After completing his studies, he worked with his mother at a restaurant in Bartica, where she was the head chef. When she went on leave, she entrusted him to manage the kitchen. That experience, though challenging, became a valuable learning opportunity. For the first time, Adams led a team, faced new culinary challenges, and discovered the joys of leadership.
One of the most difficult tasks he encountered was mastering curry preparation. As a child, he had avoided cooking or eating curry with rice, preferring it only with roti. Nevertheless, the dish became a best-seller at Banks DIH, where he was employed, and he quickly adapted.
Adams also discovered a passion for bulk cooking. The challenge of scaling recipes while maintaining flavour excites him, as it requires precise culinary math and attention to detail. Observing and learning from other chefs further enriches his craft. While he appreciates the techniques of others, Adams adds his own flair to every dish, ensuring each creation reflects his unique culinary identity.
Crocheting, the joy of Adams’ life, reentered his world when he saw a colleague working on a colourful top. Intrigued, he offered to finish the project, reigniting his love for the art form. This rediscovery led him to teach his friend Marissa to crochet, sparking a collaborative exchange of skills. The pair challenged each other to explore new patterns and designs, an experience Adams credits with enhancing his creativity. Their mutual growth as artists culminated in the decision to start individual businesses, with Adams launching Chris Creation.
