Lethem low income housing project stalled with no resolution in sight

Dear Editor,

The Xmas season and end of 2024 is fast approaching. For many residents of the Rupununi the year started excellently when they were approved for low income houses in Lethem. Sadly, since the official handing over of the first set of houses the remaining houses remain incomplete and expectant new home owners are now resigned to the fact they won’t be moving into their new homes any time soon. The government agency overseeing this project – the Ministry of Housing and Water – has been silent and homeowners remain in the dark as to why the completion of their homes is taking so long. Some of the contractors have moved on to bigger contracts and seem to have put their housing contract on hold. Many houses are over 75% completed but have remained stalled for months.

It is time officials from the Ministry of Housing give a public update on the status of this housing project.  Is the project on schedule? If not, what is the action being taken to ensure compliance by the contractors? Can they give a time frame for when the houses may be completed and ready to hand over? When President Ali and his PPP government announced this housing program, I am certain that they expected the people to benefit from this initiative within the shortest possible time. Sadly this has not been the reality. Maybe it’s time for His Excellency to get personally involved in this project as he has done with contractors in the city. For this seems the only way that contractors honour their contracts.

Sincerely,
