Two charged with murder of Sophia fish vendor

Two men appeared yesterday before Magistrate Faith McGusty charged with the murder of a Sophia fish vendor.

Keon Lewis, a 28-year-old fish vendor of Lot 1269 South Cummings Park and Joshua Persaud, a 22-year-old fish vendor were taken before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. They were not required to plead to the indictable charge.

It is alleged that on Saturday November 23rd at the Stabroek Market bazaar the pair murdered Devon Nigel Williams. Lewis was represented by lawyer Stacy Goodings who noted that this was the first time Lewis had ever been before the court.

The prosecution asked for a month for the matter to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice. The hearing was adjourned to the 8th of January 2025 for report.

Enquiries disclosed that Williams was living with his 52-year-old mother Dorette Anne LaRose, a clothes vendor.

According to LaRose, prior to her son’s death (at about 07:00hrs on 2024-11-22), she was at home when she received information that her son was lying under the Special Constabulary Outpost steps at Stabroek Market with what appeared to be wounds on his body.

As a result, she left home and went to Stabroek Market where she saw her son lying under the constabulary stairs, with an injury to the back of his head. The woman said she questioned her son as to how he suffered his injury and he told her that someone by the name ‘Stitchie’ had chopped him because he stole from him.

The EMT was summoned to the scene and Williams was taken to the GPH where he was treated and discharged.

At about 07:00hrs on Tuesday, LaRose said she was at home when she checked on her son and discovered him lying motionless on his bed. The EMT was summoned to the scene and the victim was pronounced dead.

The scene was processed by detectives from the CID  Crime Lab. The body was examined and injuries were seen to his left thigh, right hand, right shin bone, left elbow, forehead, left jaw and head.
