-court told
Two Cubans who were to be deported for overstaying their time here are going back home on their own tickets.
This was what was told yesterday to Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court by their attorney Melvin Duke.
On Tuesday, Haciel Rodriguez and Yaima Stevens along with five others appeared before the court on charges of overstaying their time in Guyana without seeking an extension. Following their admission the magistrate signed the deportation application filed against them.
However, Duke on Tuesday made a special request for the duo to leave voluntarily instead of being deported as this could enable their return to Guyana in the future since Stevens’ husband is employed as a miner in the country.
The magistrate deferred signing deportation orders and instructed that an update on their travel arrangements be provided yesterday while they were kept in custody to assure compliance.
Yesterday, the court was told that tickets were purchased for both and Rodriguez was to have returned to Cuba yesterday. Duke requested that Stevens be released into the custody of her employer while her ticket was being purchased.
The Immigration Department however objected to this due to Stevens’ employer having a history of harbouring immigrants who have overstayed their time without extensions. The Immi-gration Department requested that she be kept in their custody and sent to the East La Penitence police station if the ticket is not sent to immigration.
