Rebecca Anthony, the grieving mother of three-month-old Kyrie Nelson, continues to face roadblocks in her pursuit of justice seven months after her son’s death at Mya’s Daycare in Samatta Point Grove, East Bank Essequibo.

Kyrie passed away on June 28 under suspicious circumstances, but no arrest or charge has been filed against the daycare owner. Anthony claims the facility was operating without legal authorisation when she entrusted her baby to their care while heading to work.

Anthony recalled the horrifying moment she was informed of her son’s condition. “I got a call saying Kyrie was bleeding from his nose. He was healthy when I left him that morning,” she said. Her 16-year-old son, who arrived at the daycare ahead of her, found the operator, Mya Archer, holding the unresponsive infant and instructed her to take him to the hospital. Despite the medical staff’s efforts, Kyrie was pronounced dead at 2:01 pm.

Anthony alleges that the investigation has been plagued with problems. Further, the file was sent back to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) due to the absence of a post-mortem report. The mother described being “given the royal runaround” during the autopsy process and expressed frustration over delays caused by the investigating officer stationed at the Diamond Police Station.

“To this day, only a teacher at the daycare has been charged, not the owner. I’ve cried every day since losing my son,” Anthony related, adding that her older sister recently received a call about the ongoing issues with the case file.

Anthony is demanding swift action and accountability for her child’s death. “This is not just about Kyrie. It’s about ensuring no other family suffers like this,” she said.  Despite her relentless efforts, she says justice feels elusive, leaving her to grapple with both the loss of her son and a justice system she feels has failed her.
