Guyana’s attitude to India is bothering me

Dear Editor,

Tuesday, December 3, 2024 Stabroek News Editorial titled, ‘Charandass Persaud’s road construction contract,’ revelation is the sort that could require some ministers or perhaps the President to either make a public apology or tender their resignations. But this is Guyana, where we have lost our sense of decency. Editor, what bothers me most of all is Guyana’s attitude to India. The President with pomp and ceremony just received the Prime Minister of India.

My concern is why the PPP Govern-ment has shown disregard for the people and Government of India by posting High Commissioners of dubious character. Remember Ronald Gajraj who was embroiled in many horrible events involving the Black Clothes allegedly in many unsavoury activities to the point where the US Government revoked his visa, causing him to go through Europe to take up his post as our High Commissioner to India? Then we had the debacle with Charandass’ vulgar outburst to an Indian female animal activist? Is it that our Government, in spite of the flowery speeches and elaborate dinners, really has little regard for India?

Instead of sending persons with diplomatic skills and propriety, we post to India persons as reward for political work for the PPP and nothing else. This eye-pass to India must stop as we stand by to hear who will be our new High Commissioner to India.

Sincerely,

Nigel Bacchus
