My concerns over the growing issue of irresponsible driving on our roadways

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my concern about the growing issue of irresponsible driving on our roadways. It seems that many drivers fail to consider the essential “5 C’s” of safe driving: Care, Courtesy, Consideration, Caution, and Common Sense. This negligence not only endangers their own lives but also puts the safety of others at risk.

Care is the foundation of responsible driving. Yet, we see drivers speeding, weaving through traffic, and ignoring road signs daily. Simple acts of care, such as obeying speed limits and yielding the right of way, could drastically reduce accidents.

Courtesy, another critical component, is often absent. A wave of thanks for allowing someone to merge, or patiently waiting your turn at a four-way stop, could foster a safer and more pleasant driving experience. Unfortunately, road rage and impatience dominate instead.

Consideration for other road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, is equally vital. Ignoring crosswalks or overtaking cyclists too closely reflects a lack of thoughtfulness that can lead to devastating consequences.

Caution is especially necessary in unpredictable conditions such as heavy traffic, bad weather, or near schools and playgrounds. Sadly, many drivers act as though they’re invincible, ignoring these risks entirely.

Lastly, Common Sense seems to be a diminishing trait. From distracted driving caused by texting to driving under the influence, these actions defy logic and put countless lives in jeopardy.

I urge all drivers to reevaluate their behavior on the road and adhere to the 5 C’s. Traffic laws are not mere suggestions but rules designed to protect everyone. Let us not wait for tragedy to strike before taking responsibility.

Sincerely,

Mario Imrit
