The village of Akawini captured the inaugural edition of the Pomeroon Inter-Village Floodlight Football Championship, beating Macaseema on penalty kicks to capture the $60,000 first prize and bragging rights.

Under overcast conditions and intermittent showers, the final produced an even contest with momentum swaying either side, and by the full time, the two could not be separated with the scoreline at 2-2 at the Kabakaburi Village Ground in the Upper Pomeroon River.

Akawini started the penalty shoot-out which ended 5-5 at the end of the initial phase after both teams converted from the distance.

The sudden death penalty shoot-out realm was then required to decide the outcome.

Amazingly, all 11 Akawini players were on target, with Macaseema’s 11th penalty kicker succumbing to pressure with a missed kick, thus sealing the victory for their opponent.

Meanwhile, in the earlier semifinal segment, Akawini dispatched Karawab 4-0 while Macaseema squeaked past Charity 1-0.
