Asha Kissoon says appointment to Parliament remains legal

Dr Asha Kissoon

-ignores agreement to give up seat

Dr Asha Kissoon, Member of Parliament for The New Movement (TNM), has reiterated her stance that her appointment to the National Assembly was both legal and constitutional.

Speaking with Stabroek News yesterday, Dr. Kissoon said, “My only comment is that the last official statement from GECOM was that I was duly appointed. There are a lot of personal opinions on the matter, but my appointment was legal and constitutional.”

She ignored the fact that there was an agreement with two other parties in the list joinder for her to vacate her seat after 80 days. TNM, the LJP and ANUG had agreed on the period of occupancy for the one seat by each of the three parties. Kissoon was sworn in as a MP on April 24, 2023 and has since refused to surrender her seat.
