Deryck Carl Holder, a 40-year-old taxi driver from Lot 9 Second Street Meadow Bank, Georgetown, was arrested on Monday and charged yesterday with a $50m armed robbery on a Lusignan businessman.

The police today said in a statement that Holder is accused of invading the businessman’s home and robbing him at gunpoint of $50,160,000 in cash. The armed robbery is said to have occurred at about 3 am on 2024-10-12 at the businessman’s home at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

The matter was called yesterday at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Sunil Scarce — but the accused was said to be on remand at Lusignan for another armed robbery matter. As such, the matter was adjourned to 2024-12-19 for the charge to be read to the accused.

Enquiries, police say,  disclosed that the complainant resides in a two-storey concrete building. The lower flat of the building is used as a hardware store owned by the businessman.

On the date and time in question, the businessman’s brother (a doctor) was at home sleeping in his bedroom when he was confronted by the three gunmen who were demanding cash.

The brother gave the men what he had in his possession, which was about $100,000 in cash. The men demanded more from him, and because he was fearful for his life, he took them to the lower flat (hardware store).

The men began to search and found the $50m cash that was in a black plastic bag. The men took the money and escaped from the two-storey building and into a getaway car.
