The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is offering its resources to the region to assist in its fight against financial irregularities and state corruption.

Speaking at the Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) “Expert Forum on Corruption in the Age of AI [artificial intelligence]” held on International Anti-Corruption Day, December 9,  Chief of the FBI’s International Corruption Unit, Eugene Wu, emphasised the Bureau’s global outreach and the opportunities for collaboration with Caribbean institutions, a CDB release stated yesterday.“Corruption undermines democratic values, weakens the rule of law, and reduces public confidence in governing institutions… The FBI has developed advanced tools and strategic partnerships that can help nations, including those in the Caribbean, tackle corruption and recover illicit assets effectively.”Wu underscored the FBI’s recent advancements, including the Foreign Extortion Prevention Act (FEPA), enacted in 2023, which enables the prosecution of foreign officials soliciting bribes from US companies, addressing the “demand” side of bribery and strengthening accountability for corrupt practices worldwide.
