Dear Editor,
Walking around, one could see the various changes happening between individuals and government. Because of competition, many stores/supermarkets are going the extra mile to attract consumers even though some have some incredibly astonishing prices. Attached to these variations of ‘development’, we’re witnessing unconscionable destructive and self-centered behaviour by few individuals who don’t seem to have any regards.
Editor, the Leonora Mall attracts thousands of visitors daily and outside of the yard, a canter is parked there daily with water coconut shells that emits a disgusting stench. Does the canter belong to one of the vendors in the mall, because I don’t see a vendor around? Why are such unsanitary acts being allowed? We are seeing a surge of roadside vendors selling edibles around environs that are dirty. Whilst some try to maintain cleanliness, saboteurs go and desecrate the place out of jealousy or sinister motivations. Are there any health officials visiting these roadside stalls to conduct checks and also where the preparation of edibles are happening? As usual, I hope those responsible don’t act unless a government official is directly affected due to their incompetence and then we witness to another circus show.
In closing, Editor, this year, Guyana’s roadways seem to be in the race to chalk up irresponsible accidents, but at the same time, fools continue to park their vehicles carelessly on the roadways. There are many trailers, old vehicles etc., parked on the roadsides, some even on the roads for months without any warning reflectors, lights etc., this negligence is a magnet for deaths and more than once Guyana paid the price in the past. Government has machines to take these death hazards and utilize them for their own use to recover cost. Many of these roadside embarrassment are operable. Even in the new schemes this nonsense is happening, and there the roads are finer.
Sincerely,
Sahadeo Bates
