A group of approximately 40 Venezuelan Warrau including 11 children were left stranded on Church Street in Georgetown last night beside Real Value Chinese Supermarket, following a chaotic series of events involving government officials and the Alliance For Change (AFC).
The group travelled from the Essequibo Coast to Georgetown with the expectation of receiving assistance from the government after allegedly being invited by President Irfaan Ali.
Speaking with SN, the leader of the group, Jason Baptista, said that they had received an invitation from the President’s office to come to Georgetown, where they were promised support. Baptista claimed that after meeting with the President’s team in Unity, he was given a contact number by the President’s office. However, upon arriving in Georgetown, Baptista and his group were unable to get in touch with the designated contact, leading to their current predicament.
“We’ve been here since 1 pm, and we traveled from 5 am. We here in Guyana since 2021,” Baptista told SN, visibly frustrated. The group had pooled their resources to make the journey to the capital, only to be left without assistance.
