-EPA says no environmental study required
A fuel blending facility spearheaded by local fuel distributor Shi-Oil has been proposed for Maripa along the Essequibo River.
The partners in Shi-Oil are listed as Shairaz Ali and Javed Ali.
If approved, the facility will blend various grades of gasoline, diesel, and kerosene, meeting growing local demand for fuel diversity and efficiency according to the project description submitted by the company to the EPA.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has screened the application for the construction but has not yet approved the project. The EPA however stated that it “will not significantly affect the environment,” thus exempting it from requiring an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). However, the EPA has mandated that an emergency response plan be developed to safeguard against any unforeseen risks.
