Guyanese national in US custody dies in hospital

A Guyanese citizen has died while in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in Miami, Florida.

Ramesh Amechand, a 60-year-old Guyanese in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was pronounced dead at the Larkin Community Hospital Palm Springs campus in Hialeah, Florida, on December 16 at 4:50pm, an ICE release stated yesterday.

An autopsy is pending to determine the official cause of death.

Amechand was admitted on November 19 as an in-patient after having an abnormal electrocardiogram. The medical staff reported that Amechand went to ventricular tachycardia arrest, was resuscitated and intubated on November 25.
