President Irfaan Ali yesterday confirmed Clifton Hicken as substantive Commissioner of Police along with four Deputy Commissioners during a ceremony at the Office of the President.

Hicken, who had been acting as Commissioner since 2022, is the first person who has surpassed the official retirement age of 55 to be confirmed in the position. His extended tenure was authorised under provisions of the Constitution (Prescribed Matters) Act, which allows the President to extend the Commissioner’s service up to age 60.

The appointment has come despite views expressed that Hicken cannot be confirmed in the position since he is already past the age of retirement.
