Diplomatic tensions between Venezuela and Guyana have escalated following Caracas’ inauguration of a bridge on Ankoko Island. Guyana’s half of the island was seized by Venezuela in 1966.

The inauguration of the bridge has been condemned by President Irfaan Ali who called the construction  an “illegitimate claim” over Guyanese land.  Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hugh Hilton Todd, issued a formal protest and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to pursuing the matter through international legal channels.

Speaking at the Guyana Defence Force’s Christmas Luncheon at Base Camp Ayanganna on Thursday, President Ali made it clear that Guyana would not accept Venezuela’s provocations.
