Saharan dust sweeping across Guyana

The National Weather Watch Centre (NWCC) has issued a special information bulletin, warning of the ongoing effects of a very high concentration of Saharan dust currently sweeping across Guyana and the Caribbean.

Meteorologist D. Ramlakhan issued the bulletin confirming that this weather phenomenon is expected to persist until Friday, December 27, 2024.

According to the bulletin, the dense dust haze is significantly reducing visibility in affected areas and could pose substantial risks, particularly for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and other lung diseases. Those with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and young children are especially vulnerable to these conditions.

Speaking with SN today,  Ramlakhan confirmed that the dust plume, originating from the Sahara Desert in North Africa, is known to travel vast distances across the Atlantic Ocean, carrying fine particulate matter that can linger in the atmosphere for days. This event is expected to inhibit cloud formation and deep convection, potentially reducing rainfall and impacting local weather patterns during the duration of the event.

The NWCC has urged the public to take the necessary precautions to protect their health.

The National Weather Watch Centre is continuing to closely monitor the situation and will issue updates as needed.
