Surinamese man found dead in trench, cops probing

Police are investigating the suspected murder of 23-year-old Marciano Michel Nelon, also known as ‘Dutchie,’ a Surina-mese national employed as a labourer who resided in Bangla-desh, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.

According to a police statement, the incident occurred between Saturday, December 21, 2024, around 14:30 hrs, and Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 08:00 hrs, at the deceased’s residence.

Police reported that ranks responded to an anonymous call on Sunday, which stated that a man was lying in a trench at Port Mourant with visible wounds to his face and appear-ed to be dead. Upon arrival, the police found “the motionless body of the deceased, known to the Police due to prior questioning regarding the alleged murder of Parmanand Pertab on October 26, 2024, near the Port Mourant Market area.

Pertab was reportedly killed following a robbery at the Port Mourant Market after he and an accomplice robbed a goldsmith. In November, businessman Seeindra Marimutoo was charged with Pertab’s murder.

The body of Nelon was discovered in a drain along the southern side of Bangladesh Back Street, which runs east to west, approximately 100 meters east of his house. Chop wounds were seen on his forehead, chin, back of the head, and the back of both feet.

The police statement further noted that upon examining Nelon’s residence, officers found a small amount of suspected blood on the floor, and the deceased’s clothing was scattered, suggesting a possible struggle had taken place.

Nelon’s body was transported to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where a doctor on duty pronounced him dead. The body  was subsequently moved to Ramoo Funeral Home and placed in cold storage, pending a post-mortem examination.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
