Police are investigating an accident which occurred at about 5.45 pm on Thursday at the junction of Croal Street and Winter Place, Georgetown, which resulted in the death of a 23-year-old motorcyclist.
The accident involved motorcycle #CL 9507, ridden by Mikel Blair, a 23-year-old of Lot 261 ‘D’ Field Turkeyen, Georgetown, (now deceased); and another motorcycle ridden by Tavel Jonas, a 27-year-old from Lot 101 Arapaima Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown.
Enquiries disclosed that at about 5:55 pm on Thursday, a report was made to the Brickdam Police Station (Operations Room), informing ranks of an accident involving two motorcycles on Croal Street and Winter Place. Traffic ranks were immediately notified and visited the said location but there was no evidence or sign of an accident.
The ranks subsequently received information at about 6 pm from the Georgetown Public Hospital Police Outpost that two males, who were believed to be involved in an accident, were at the GPHC’s Emergency Unit.
When ranks proceeded to the hospital they met the two motorcyclists, one of whom (Blair) was unconscious, and was being treated by doctors. Blair died at about 7 pm and his body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Mortuary awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination.
The other motorcyclist, Jonas, suffered a fractured right leg and was treated and later admitted as a patient in a stable condition.
Nicole Jones, the mother of the deceased told Stabroek News that on the day of the accident her son left to go and ride his motorcycle in the company of his friends and her cousin. Jones stated that she received a call saying that her son had been admitted to the Georgetown Hospital. She went on to say that upon arriving at the hospital and attempting to see her son, she was barred from entering and had to force herself past security and doctors to see him. Jones said she spoke to her son who was hooked up to an oxygen mask. She stated that her son reassured her that he was okay.
Jones went on to say that sometime after exiting the room she saw doctors who were previously working on her son leaving the room and thought to herself that something was wrong and immediately rushed into the room only to see her son being placed in a body bag. She went on to state that no one made an effort to notify the family that her son was dead even though she made it clear she was his mother.
Jones added that her son, who was employed as a driver at Swift taxi service was a kind and quiet boy who ensured he stayed out of trouble and didn’t get into fights. She lamented how badly she wanted justice for her son and added how greatly her son’s passing has affected their family.
Further investigation of the accident is ongoing, the police said.
