Cop inflicts injuries on self following argument with girlfriend on Main St

Police are investigating an incident involving a  22-year-old   Police Constable stationed at Ruimveldt Police Station (Marine Department), and a 32-year-old Woman Special Constable (Trainee at the Police Academy at Eve Leary), that occurred at about  10.10 pm on Friday on Main Street, Georgetown.

The police issued a statement on the incident yesterday.

According to the woman, she and the constable have been sharing a relationship for the past six months.  On the date and time mentioned above, she was ‘liming’ with the constable on Main Street at the Christmas Village, and they were drinking Stag beers.

The woman said that she received a call on her cell phone from a female who told her to stay away from her boyfriend. After the call, the woman and the constable had an argument, during which the constable took out a knife from the waist of his pants and tried to cut his neck. While trying to inflict injuries on himself, he was stopped by public-spirited citizens in the area.

An ambulance was summoned, and he was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is receiving treatment. The constable, who was heavily intoxicated, behaved disorderly and tried to inflict more injuries on himself.

Several abrasions were seen on his neck, and three abrasions on his left hand. His condition is listed as stable.

The constable is being monitored by a Corporal (from the Marine Department) at the hospital while woman was escorted to the  Police Academy by a Woman Inspector.

Several persons were questioned around the area, who verbally informed detectives that the constable inflicted the injuries on himself.

Investigations are continuing, the police said.
