Motorcyclist dies after collision at Cummings Lodge

Ryan Jordan

A collision between a motorcycle and a car on Friday at about 8.30 pm on the main access road at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, has claimed the life of a motorcyclist.

Dead is Ryan Jordan, 33, of Lot 862 3rd Field, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.

The accident involved a blue and black motorcycle – CG 6668 – ridden by Jordan, and a car – PMM 3148. The driver’s name and address are so far unknown since he fled the scene. Meanwhile an occupant of the vehicle, Ronny Rueda, a 41-year-old Cuban  has been hospitalised.

Enquiries revealed that the driver of the motor car was proceeding south along the Cummings Lodge main access road at a fast rate, while Jordan was proceeding north along the same road. In the vicinity of 7th and 8th Field, Cummings Lodge, the car allegedly swerved into the path of the motorcycle. As a result of the collision, both the motorcycle and the motorcyclist were flung into the air and ended up on the grass parapet.

An ambulance was summoned and attending medical personnel pronounced Jordan dead. The body is at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The occupant of the car, Rueda, told police that after the accident occurred that he and the driver went out to assist the motorcyclist. However, they were attacked by individuals in the area. The driver ran away and left him behind. He was then robbed of his wallet and other valuables and was assaulted by several persons. He was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted with a fractured skull. His condition is listed as stable.

Jordan’s wife, Nneka Derrick, told the Sunday Stabroek that Jordan had left home to buy ramen and ice-cream, and fill his motorcycle tank with gas.

“…when he was returning home, I don’t know what street he came out from, the station knows that. I heard that driver is from 7th Field, Sophia, and the car was fully occupied with passengers… I think a Spanish person and three others people in the back of the car. I’m not certain what happened, but it looks like everybody was intoxicated. They were coming in, driving hard and hit Ryan on the driver’s side and he pitched up in the air and hit the utility post.”

And according to eyewitnesses, “the people in the car tried to move his body, I don’t know for what reason because he drops by the post. By the time I reached to the scene his body was more to the road… everybody flee the scene in the car, except for one passenger [the Cuban].” Derrick added that people ran out to see what had happened, and she understands from the Cuban man that at the time of the incident, “he came to purchase the vehicle and the mechanic was the test driver.”

Jordan had returned to Guyana from Trinidad on February 26, 2022. Since then, he had been working as a construction worker and had purchased the bike just over a year ago. Apart from his common-law wife, he has left behind his 7-year-old son, mother, and nine siblings. Ryan was described by his relatives as a very loving person, happy, and a straight forward person who did not hold any grudges against anyone.

Derrick is calling for justice. “I want justice for him because Ryan is a sweetheart, Ryan just went down the road for groceries. That was it… they [passengers and driver] move his body from where it was and she [eyewitness] telling me they see them pulling the man Ryan from where he landed… that’s a whole confusion. When I see the man [Ryan] I see his whole face with blood.” (Subhana Shiwmangal)
