North Sophia man dies after being stabbed in a fight

Saif Ally

A 22-year-old man died after being allegedly stabbed by a 31-year-old mechanic of North Sophia Squatting Area, George-town at about 8 pm on Friday on the southern side of the Liliendaal Railway Embankment.

Dead is Saif Ally, a resident of Lot 22 Block ‘R’, North Sophia, George-town. The incident, according to the suspect’s father started because Ally stabbed him.

The suspect’s father, Christopher Julian Sahoye, a 58-year-old labourer of North Sophia Squatting Area, told the police that on Friday night, he was standing in an ‘alleyway’ west of his house, when Ally who was known to him for several years, approached him and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The man said that Ally, without provocation, slapped him several times across the face.

The 31-year-old suspect was sitting on a bench in the alleyway. He saw what took place and confronted Ally, resulting in a fight. The suspect then allegedly stabbed Ally in the chest with a knife, causing him to collapse to the ground where he remained motionless. The suspect then fled the scene.

The police were summoned and shortly after, attended the scene. The body was examined and what appeared to be a stab wound was observed in the centre of the chest.

Ally was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was transported to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home to await a post mortem examination. Efforts are being made to locate the suspect as investigations continue.

The victim’s mother, Sandy Jairam of ‘R’ North Sophia Squatting Area, told the Sunday Stabroek that on the night of the incident, her son’s friend informed her that he had gone searching for Ally and found him dead with blood on his face. When she went out to investigate, she saw that a crowd had gathered around her son who was lying motionless on the ground.

Jairam stated that she was unable to say what exactly had happened, but heard that “a big man and my son was fighting on the dam and his son came out and stabbed him.” She related that the incident has caused her much pain. “When I seh this hurt me, it hurt me, because in May of this year, I buried his father who died from cancer.” She is relying on the police to find the suspect so she can understand exactly why he stabbed her son the way he did.

Ally has left to mourn his 11 siblings and mother.
