(Trinidad Express) The wife of a San Fernando businessman was killed and their son was injured in a drive-by shooting on the San Fernando wharf on Friday afternoon.
The killing was one of three to have occurred between Thursday night and yesterday, pushing the murder toll to 615, compared to 567 last year. The other two murders took place in Embacadere and Diego Martin
In the San Fernando wharf murder, Monica Ghany, the wife of businessman Steve Ghany, was struck multiple times while driving a Nissan Tiida. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her son, Matthew, 20, was shot in his right hand and was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he received emergency treatment.
The killing occurred around 2 p.m. along a road that is one of the main entry points into the city, and an area where commuters on the water taxi use to exit the Ferry Terminal.
Police said that the mother and son had minutes earlier left the SFGH where they visited the businessman who is in the hospital.
It is suspected that they were headed back to their home on Alexander Road in San Fernando when they were confronted by the gunmen in a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction along the wharf.
The occupants of the vehicle fired multiple rounds of gunfire at the driver’s side of the windshield, several of which struck the woman in her upper body.
The shooters sped off and escaped.
The killing happened not far from a murder the previous night when a man, identified to the police as “Bam”, was shot multiple times and died on Lady Hailes Avenue in Embacadere. See story at right.
President of the Greater San Fernando Chamber of Commerce Kiran Singh On Friday lamented the killing of Ghany in the city.
“I am very stressed and depressed to hear of another murder in San Fernando. The wife of a businessman was brutally murdered in broad daylight and her son was injured in the unfortunate incident that was a spray of gunfire by unknown assailants. We heard that the woman passed away at the scene of the crime. We expect the police to be very diligent in their duties and arrest the criminals who have committed another grievous crime,” said Singh.
“We have crossed 600 murders in this country. We are at a record high and the year has not yet ended. When is the crime going to stop? We are extremely frustrated as a business community that there is no stopping the crime situation. We are hearing a lot of talk and no action,” said the GSFCC president.
Detectives of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations of Region Three responded to the killing and are continuing the investigation.
