(Trinidad Express) Five people were gunned down in Laventille overnight.

They have been identified as Cleon Lugin, 37, Derron Calliste, 35, Kambon Omowale, 39, Garet Smart, and Ryan Lessey, 24.

Lessey died at the scene of the shooting at Prizgar Lands in Laventille.

Within hours of the killings, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley authorised the declaration of a State of Emergency.

Lessey, Calliste, Lugin, and Omowale, and were all from Prizgar Lands.

Smart is from Thomasine Street in Laventille.

Police were told that at about 8:30 p.m yesterday a group of men were liming near the St John Shop along Prizgar Lands Circular, when a blue Hyundai Elantra and a white Nissan AD Wagon pulled up.

A group of gunmen exited the vehicles.

Before the group could react the suspects opened fire, hitting six. There was only one survivor, a 24-year-old who was shot to the upper left arm.

The suspects then returned to the vehicles and drove away.

The police were notified and a team of officers form the Port of Spain Division as well as the Homicide Bureau including Sup Douglas, Insp Joseph, Insp Ramsumair, Sgt Ramsaroop, Cpl Nunes, among others, responded.

Police suspect that this killing is linked to Saturday’s fatal shooting of Trevor Williams outside of the Besson Street police station.
