Only one person’s altruism has shone through a troubling year for Guyanese

Dear Editor,

Another troubling year for Guyanese has come to the end. Yet again, we’ve seen a year filled with deadly road accidents, unnecessary murders, and extremely high increases in cost of living and frustrated Guyanese living in hope with government’s promises. Are there only bad things that happened in Guyana throughout the year? No, we see government opening newly built roads and just as they finished taking pics and walked of, the roads started to deteriorate.

We got excited with roundabouts, but most are so poorly constructed, you’d have to wonder about the engineer’s qualifications. Was there any calculations for the steepness of the turn, because so far, quite a number of vehicles have ended up in accidents on those roundabouts? We see government spending wildly with lots of expectations and at the end, the results remain the same.

Editor, all is not lost for Guyanese. Throughout the year, the Mohamed’s name seem to be the most mentioned name in Guyana, either in various media or in conversations. While I don’t know if there’s any political ambitions, I must say I am very pleased with Azruddin Mohamed’s remarkable humanitarian acts throughout the year. Guyana is extraordinarily rich but this government has no intention of elevating the ordinary man’s life and it’s sad to see that residents have given up hope on them and turning to an altruistic individual for help.

As we enter another year fuel with expectations, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Sahadeo Bates
