Bandit shot dead during robbery at Chinese restaurant in Sophia

A robbery bid at the Wan Dan Chinese Restaurant on Dennis Street, Sophia, ended in death on Tuesday afternoon for one of two bandits.

The other suspect, identified as 20-year-old Sherwin Duncan, was wounded and later arrested but managed to escape police custody while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The Guyana Police Force is yet to issue an official statement on the robbery or the escape.

The incident occurred around midday on Tuesday when the restaurant’s owners were in the process of installing a grill door as a security measure. Accord-ing to sources, the two armed bandits rushed into the establishment and demanded money.

During the robbery attempt, a man who was inside the restaurant reportedly escaped and alerted both the authorities and a nearby Chinese supermarket.

One of the bandits was subsequently shot dead on the spot while Duncan sustained injuries and was taken into police custody. However, Duncan later escaped while under police guard at the hospital.

A police constable assigned to guard him has since been placed under close arrest, and an internal investigation is underway.
