Trinidad Law Association calls for the protection of state attorneys

Randall Hector

(Trinidad Guardian) The Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) is calling all state attorneys to be protected following the shooting death of Randall Hector.

In a media release on Thursday, the association said criminal prosecutors need to be protected, particularly under the State of Emergency.

“The LATT is of the view that given the role that Mr. Hector played in the administration of criminal justice in Trinidad and Tobago, there is an urgent need for the implementation of security measures for all prosecutors and judicial officers in the criminal justice system” the release said.

The 43-year-old father of two was shot multiple times at 7.30 pm on December 31 as he left the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church, Stan-more Avenue, Queen’s Park West.

Hector and his wife, among others, were walking to their respective vehicles when a black SUV and a Nissan B15 pulled alongside Hector’s car and occupants opened fire on him, hitting him squarely in the chest.

Hector was a state attorney who worked at the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and Attorney General’s Office. During his legal career, which began in 2006, he was also the lead attorney with the Strategic Services Agency (SSA).

Hector was killed one day after the SoE was announced to address gang violence.

In the media release, the LATT said it hoped that the objectives of the SoE “cannot be realised without the fearless efforts of the legal and judicial officers who are engaged in the criminal prosecution of violent offenders.”

The release also “roundly condemned and deplored” the brutal murder of Hector, who it said was a well-respected member of the legal profession and the national community.
