Monedderlust

Candy Boss Football Championship

A new champion will be crowned in the annual Candy Boss 8-a-side Football Championship after Monedderlust bested incumbent the Guyana Police Force by a 2-0 score last evening at the All Saints ground in New Amsterdam.

Following a scoreless first half in their semifinal fixture, Tyrone Delph opened the scoring for Monedderlust, rifling the ball past the opposing custodian in the 46th minute.

He would make his presence felt once more, sealing the victory as he found the back of the net two minutes onwards to complete his brace.

Monedderlust will now oppose the Cougars U-20 unit in the final tomorrow at the same venue after the latter defeated their senior counterparts 5-3 on Wednesday evening at the same venue in the first semifinal encounter.

Cougars U-20

Kwesi Mickle opened the scoring for the junior unit as he etched his name on the score-sheet in the fourth minute. However, the senior outfit responded in the form of Marlon Bisnelle, who converted in the sixth minute to equalise at 1-1.

The U-20 unit retorted via Gary Jarvis to retake the lead at 2-1 in the 16th minute. The Cougars U-20 doubled their advantage at 3-1 in the 26th minute as Shaqueel Semple found the back of the net. Cougars eventually reduced the score to 2-3 following an Alex Kendall strike four minutes later.

The score remained unchanged entering the halftime interval. A 3-3 score was then realised following the commencement of the second stanza, as Tyrice Olgeton made his presence felt with a 46th-minute conversion.

However, the junior side responded two minutes later to retake the lead at 4-3 following an Allister Drakes strike. The result was then sealed in the 60+2 minute, as T’John Reid slotted past the goalkeeper. The losing semifinalists will contest the third place playoff.

The winner of the tournament will pocket $600,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth place finishers will walk away with $400,000, $200,000, and $100,000, respectively, and the corresponding accolade.

Individual prizes for the most valuable player, best goalkeeper, and highest goal scorer will also be awarded.
