The regional food terminal initiative between Guyana and Barbados is making steady progress, with construction actively taking place at the site in Brown Ponds, Barbados, and an increase in private-sector participation.
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha addressed this topic during a year-end press briefing at the Ministry’s Regent Street office in Georgetown, stating that the project is on schedule for completion by the end of this year.
“The food terminal is still active,” the Minister confirmed. “In fact, we have seen increased involvement from the private sector. Construction at Brown Ponds in Barbados is ongoing, and we are still making progress on this project. We are optimistic that it will be finished by the end of next year.”
The Minister also announced that Novo Farms Limited, the company working on the Barbados project, plans to expand its operations to Guyana. “The same company currently involved in the Guyana-Barbados project will be establishing a facility in Guyana. This will not only be a partnership between Guyana and Barbados but will also engage the private sector,” he noted.
Earlier in 2024, Stabroek News reported that Novo Farms Limited was awarded the contract to construct the food terminal at Lears, St. Michael, Barbados. This facility is anticipated to play a vital role in bolstering regional food security by promoting sustainable agricultural methods and enhancing economic collaboration between the two countries.
The intended food terminal is projected to make a considerable contribution to the economic development of both Guyana and Barbados, while also aiding in regional food security initiatives. The Caribbean region aims to reduce food imports by 25% by 2025, and the terminal is seen as a crucial component in reaching this goal.
Once completed, the food terminal will function as a centre for the processing, storage, and distribution of agricultural goods, benefitting both nations by ensuring a reliable and sustainable food supply. The involvement of private sector partners in this project is expected to bring in additional expertise and financial support, aiding in the achievement of the long-range vision for food security across the Caribbean.
The food terminal had been mentioned as long ago as 2022.
