Ten babies were born at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital on New Year’s Day, with the boys outnumbering the girls.

Hykayla Williams, 27, a medical practitioner assigned to Port Mourant Hospital, had decided to visit the hospital because she was overdue, having expected her baby on December 23. She was subsequently admitted and although the delivery was intense, she warmly welcomed her second child, a boy.

First-time mother, 19-year-old Eleyana Henry of Lot 180 Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, welcomed her bouncing baby boy whom she named Elijah, followed by 23-year-old Hamwantie Neeoram, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam,  who birthed her third child, the only boy of the family.

The other mothers delivered their newborns during the first twenty-four hours of 2025, and according to Regional Health Officer, Dr Vineshri Khirodhar, all the deliveries were normal, and free from complications.

During 2024, midwives delivered 1405 babies at the Regional Hospital.
