Residents of Sisters Village particularly Duncan Street and Saw Pit Turn on the West Bank of Demerara are again calling on authorities to finish the road which is posing dangers in its present state.
The road has now caused about three accidents, with at least one injuring a person.
In a video shared by one of the residents, Rajin Persaud, two vehicles collided, eventually hitting a utility pole and cracking it.
In the video Persaud stated that “this is one of the many accidents that happen ever since the contractors has damaged this road. Apparently like the driver try to swerve off and he end up hitting the lamp post. I only hope those in authority can do something about this as early as possible. We have babies we have children. I am an asthmatic. Every day the dust coming down. This road is very dangerous for the residents here”. In his last interview with Stabroek News he stated that the road has also caused damage to his bridge and motor vehicle.
The road was dug up by a contractor who then filled it back. Stabroek News understands that R. Sundhat Drainage and Irrigation Services, which was responsible for the initial works, completed the filling of the large hole that was dug but was asked to stop as another contracting company, GAICO, was expected to take over. Reliable sources further revealed that the company was not paid for the work it completed and bore all the associated expenses.
When this newspaper spoke to residents earlier in December, some recounted accidents with some even sharing instances of persons crashing at the construction site. One shop owner stated that a car collided with a motorcycle. The cyclist was eventually rushed to the Best Hospital. Others lamented the issue of dust in their homes.
Additionally Persaud had stated that a temporary fix was done to the road back in December due to a visit by the president however the aggregate placed has since begun to wash away.
Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill had visited the area in November and promised to have the road repaired but it did not come to fruition.
