The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) A won the inaugural ‘Maid Marian Wheat Up’ Women’s Football Championship, defeating the GDF B by a 7-1 score last evening at the National Training Centre, Providence.
Patsy Walker commenced the rout in the 15th minute. Sandra Johnson then doubled GDF A’s advantage two minutes later. Glendy Lewis then got into the scoring act in the 28th minute as the score ballooned to 3-0.
The score remained unchanged entering the halftime interval. Johnson then completed her double in the 44th minute to further strengthen GDF A’s grip on the contest. Anastasia Horsham eventually reduced the deficit to 1-4 in the 46th minute.
However, any hopes of a comeback were extinguished as
Lewis etched her name on the score-sheet in the 47th to push the score to 5-1. Johnson then sealed her hat-trick three minutes later, before Jalade Trim made her presence felt in the 55th to seal the eventual result.
Due to the results, GDF A pocketed $500,000 and the championship trophy, while the loser received $200,000 and the corresponding accolade.
In the third-place playoff, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) arrested Fruta Conquerors 10-0 to pocket $100,000.
In the earlier semifinal round, GDF A defeated GPF 1-0, while GDF B crushed Fruta Conquerors 6-0.
